The first thing about Django Django's third full-length that'll impress listeners is the pacing: it's breathless. More often than not the arty psych-pop explorers--who totally excel at tossing a dizzying number of genres into a single song--sound as if they're racing to a finish line somewhere beyond Neptune; this is especially true of "Tic Tac Toe," which shudders with sci-fi reverb, manic hand claps and interstellar harmonies, and "In Your Beat," a dive into the kind of trippy, cosmic alt-dance beats popular at the dawn of the raver '90s. Yet Marble Skies never feels hurried nor rushed, and this can be attributed to the Brits' heightened emphasis on pop focus and brevity. Where much of their earlier catalog revels in athletic complexity, a song like "Champagne" is all about clean, crisp lines and hooks that bubble and fizz effortlessly.
