Don't Stop The World

Two partially rocking tracks rise well above the likeably fey artiness of Deaf School's 1977 second album -- "Capaldi's Cafe" is a hearty Cockney alehouse shout-punk brawler, and "Hypertension Yeah Yeah Yeah" starts out crocheting a fairly convincing Thin Lizzy guitar tapestry. Both cuts eventually lose their footing somewhat, though, and depart the dive bar for the Tin Pan Alley cabaret; maybe the band thought of rock as slumming. Another highlight is "What A Jerk," the Afro-Caribbean co-ed harmonies and rhythm of which sound startlingly similar to Vampire Weekend, decades before the fact.
