Vives' debut album was as close to a watershed event as you can get in Latin pop. He proved that you can play "unsophisticated" country music (vallenato) and have a monster pop hit ("La Gota Fria"). "Clasicos" sounds as fresh and lively today as it did in 1994, burgeoning with the accordion, traditional flute and ensemble singing of his native Colombia.
